In this exercise I talk a little bit about the tendency to pitch the body forward particularly in ballet which requires an uplifted posture. The key to creating the space in the upper torso is to balancing the length both front and back in the body. This requires us to get our breathe into our back ribs which will naturally lift us. I just started taking ballet again and I notice my own tendency to pitch my torso forward and rely too much on the muscles in the front of the body, which caused my undue neck and shoulder tension.
Demo of the Spine Stretch Forward:
You can do this exercise in a chair or with your legs straight out. It’s an excellent way of helping to balance the ribs over the pelvis and release undue neck and shoulder strain.
